To provide reliable, affordable and sustainable water and sanitation services at demand responsive and varying levels of service to 352 822 people in the informal settlements as a means to achieving the water related MDGs and WSSD targets
Project description
The project is an integrated water and sanitation approach that adopts a demand based approach where the communities take leadership in planning, preparing proposals, implementation and post-completion maintenance and management of their water and sanitation projects under the guidance of expertise based on the latest sector studies and reviews. The strategy is based on the strengthening of communities’ capacity to manage their own development process as a means for community economic empowerment, social cohesion strengthening and poverty alleviation. The project is to be implemented through a partnership approach with Athi Water Services Board (AWSB), a State Corporation, (within the policy environment established by the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI) and the emerging SWAp (Sector Wide Approach)), WSP-AF, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company, and Pamoja Trust.
Governance – the project is in line with the Water sector reforms focusing on water policies that empower devolved structures and clearly separates the regulation, asset holding and service provision; Ownership- the approach used in this program has arisen from grassroots approach of negotiation and planning by communities to enable better housing development and infrastructure; Innovation and flexibility – the key innovation in this program is the engagement and scale-up of community based programs that have made unprecedented breakthroughs in the negotiation of land tenure, land use and physical planning, housing improvement and WSS services provision in informal settlements in Nairobi; Integrated Approach - The project aims to engage the IWRM approach by ensuring that human waste and solid waste disposal is carefully considered and included to ensure environmental sustainability. This will be achieved by ensuring that all sanitation solutions have no adverse effect on the environment by linking the human waster disposal to sewerage treatment and solid waste to the existing city wide collection and disposal system.
Expected Outputs:
- Increased hygiene in the informal settlements through improved water availability and sanitation hence reduction in waterborne and water related diseases.
- Improved water and sanitation in each of the seven informal settlements by regularization and control of the water and sanitation facilities.
- Sustainable source of water to the informal settlements.

- Creation of jobs in the informal settlements by way of creating awareness through training of CBOs to operate and manage the sanitation kiosks for a fee
- Reduced levels of Unaccounted for Water (UfW)
- Reduced queuing time and distance to water points
