Project Description
Kiambiu Youth Group is a registered self help group under the Ministry of Gender Sports Culture & Social Services in the Department of Social Services. The group is located in Pumwani Division, Eastleigh South location of the Kamukunji constituency. It was established in year 2000 after the successful merger of 2 youth based groups working on Environmental management in Kiambiu. I.e. Kiambiu Youth Association and Kiambiu Youth Environmental Conservation Forum The merger was primarily facilitated to address the pathetic Environmental pollution standards, Economic Empowerment of the youth, Social construction and the HIV/AIDS pandemic through behavior change interventions. The youth group therefore aims at empowering the youth (boys and girls) who live in abject poverty to sustainable Economic, Social and Environmental maturity.
What we do
Kiambiu youth group carries out door to door waste collection at a fee in the Kiambiu community, this has aided in reducing haphazard disposal of solid waste in the village. The group maintains the drainage system in the village and clears-off the waste which would otherwise block the drains and pose a health hazard to the local community. KYG carries out environment cleanliness campaigns, and educates the community on the effective ways of environmental hygiene. They involve the community as a whole by holding cleanups in the village.
Kiambiu Community Cleanup
In their endeavors to have a clean environment, KYG in partnership with Maji Na Ufanisi have ventured into provision of safe and affordable water and sanitation facilities to the community. With the construction of water points and provision of reservoirs in the community, the youth group will reach a great number of community members, who other wise have no access to safe, affordable and reliable water.
