Other Programmes :
For the last 30 years, Kenya has witnessed a sustained migration of people from the rural areas to urban centres and cities, particularly the City of Nairobi, in search of jobs and a better life. Unfortunately, such urban areas have been poorly placed to take up such huge numbers of migrants, most of whom have limited skills. Similarly, the central government has been equally unable to facilitate the provision of basic services to poor urban communities.
Maji na Ufanisi has been at the forefront in working closely with government to address this huge gap. To that end, Maji na Ufanisi has been implementing the Urban Water and Environmental Sanitation Programme in 10 urban slum villages. This programme has a number of projects, the best known one being the KENSUP project. This is a joint project between GoK and UN Habitat with Maji na Ufanisi being the implementing partner. KENSUP is currently being implemented in Soweto slum village (in Kibera) to improve the water, sanitation, solid waste management as well as establishing a spine road across Kibera slum. The other projects under this programme are described elsewhere.
