Rural Water and Environmental Sanitation Programme

Over 80 % of Kenya is made up of arid and semi arid lands (ASALs) and is home to over 10 million people. Water and grazing are the biggest challenges in these ASAL areas. Unfortunately, since Independence, successive governments have paid insufficient attention to the plight of these ASAL areas. Consequently, NGOs have been called upon to assist the people who live in these dry areas, get enough supplies of water for their human and animal needs. To that end, Maji na Ufanisi implemented a 5 years water and sanitation project for 4 ASAL districts (Marsabit, West Pokot,  Taita Taveta and Ijara Districts) funded by DfID.

Currently, Maji na Ufanisi is planning to mount a sequel project but this time round, expanding the scope to include Small Towns and Rural Areas (including ASALs). The inclusion of small towns is in recognition of the fact that they too experience city-like water and sanitation problems (as in urban slums) which have been largely ignored by the relevant authorities. Yet again, the work of Maji na Ufanisi will be aimed at complementing the efforts of the Government of Kenya.
