Advocacy

Over the years, MnU has expanded its focus beyond Water and Environmental Sanitation (WES) delivery to become a key player in water and sanitation governance advocacy in Kenya, Africa (through the Africa Civil Society Network on Water and Sanitation - ANEW) and at the Global level

Research

MnU has partnered with universities and like minded organizations to research, document and publish best practices and lessons learnt as a means of ensuring that other actors get to know the informative results that we have so far achieved; information that will lead to replication and scaling up

Innovative Approaches and Models

Through experience and learning, Maji na Ufanisi has developed several approaches and models that it uses in its work. Examples of these approaches and models include the Integrated Community Development Approach and the Maji Enterprise Model among many others

MnU in the Communities

Maji na Ufanisi has carried out activities in the informal settlements in Nairobi, rural areas such as Kativani and Marsabit as well as small towns like Naivasha. MnU works with numerous CBOs that form the large base of the organization’s implementing partners.

Awards and Recognition

Over the years, Maji na Ufanisi has been variously recognized for its high quality support to disadvantaged Kenyans. In the past, Maji na Ufanisi has been awarded with the National Human Settlements Award by the Government of Kenya as well as the MILGAP Award by the UN HABITAT

MnU in Schools

Maji na Ufanisi carries out Water, Sanitation and Hygiene interventions as well as supplementing City Council efforts in public schools, particularly those adjacent to the informal settlements

Welcome to Maji na Ufanisi

Maji na Ufanisi (MnU) is a unique organization. We are an award-winning Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) working in partnership with local communities, schools, research institutions, universities, government, donor agencies and the private sector to bring innovative water and environmental sanitation solutions to poor and disadvantaged people in Kenya.

Indeed, our organization has gained expertise in building the capacity of grassroots communities and institutions to analyze and address their development. In the last 13 years, we have supported Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and local level NGOs to reach the neediest and most vulnerable groups in Nairobi’s informal settlements as well as in small towns and rural areas of Kenya.

MnU works with these organizations to establish basic Water and Environmental Sanitation (WES) capabilities within the communities and to improve their ability to sustainably access and manage these important economic resources. MnU has extensive experience in community organizing and invests a lot of effort in building social capital, which is very crucial for the successful implementation and sustainability of community development projects. Experience has shown that, effective community mobilization can lead to genuine democracy, representative, fair leadership and responsible, collective management of community assets.

What's New?

The Maji na Ufanisi Annual Report and Accounts 2011 is out.

This annual report covers progress attained by Maji na Ufanisi (Water & Development) in 2011. The period under review marks the second year of implementation of MnU’s 3-year Strategic Plan (2010-2012). The MnU Strategic Plan goal is to improve the quality of life of the disadvantaged people through participatory, innovative, pro-poor water and environmental sanitation solutions.

This report therefore presents an overview of the organization, programme areas and achievements, outstanding events in the year, key lessons learnt in the implementation of projects and presents the audited financial statements for the year ended 31^st December 2011.

Newsflash

Maji na Ufanisi completed and commisioned the facilities at the Vision Sisters site in Kibera. A sanitation block and a Women in Crisis Centre (WICC) were put up and handed over to the communities. Trainings of the group members were initiated and this shall be a continuous process. The sanitation block has been supported by the Embassy of Sweden whereas the WICC has been supported by McGill University. We will keep you abreast with the happenings in Kibera.
